Andy Rooney: Religion Is Non-sense

I’ve been putting off this particular post for a few days hoping to get a transcript of Andy Rooney’s lecture at the Fletcher School of International Law and Diplomacy, but I was uable to get one. Anyway:

During his lecture Andy Rooney said religion was non-sense and Christian fundamentalism is due to a lack of education:

The Tufts Daily—Rooney also attributed voters’ reliance on religion in the recent election to ignorance. “I am an atheist,” Rooney said. “I don’t understand religion at all. I’m sure I’ll offend a lot of people by saying this, but I think it’s all nonsense.”

He said Christian fundamentalism is a result of “a lack of education. They haven’t been exposed to what the world has to offer.”

Rooney said he also could not understand how “men who work with their hands voted for George Bush,” and again attributing the phenomenon to a lack of education. “The labor force is conservative,” he said. “How in the world did that happen?”

The arrogance of the elite continues to surprise me. From Andy Rooney to Garrison Keillor to Lt. Gen. John W. Rosa Jr., all seem to echo the same sentiment ‘that people of faith are ignorant and a threat to democratic America.’

Andy Rooney’s statement brings to mind a verse from the Holy Bible:

2 Timothy 3:7—Ever learning, and never able to come to the knowledge of the truth.

The Elite have lived in their ivory towers far too long and they have lost touch with everyday Americans. On November 2nd, 2004, Americans overwhelmingly voted ‘values’ much to the consternation of liberals on both sides of the Atlantic.

What do the Elitist fear? Terrorism? No, they fear the everyday man or woman that drives a truck or tractor, that works on an assembly line, that picnics in the park, that enjoys a neighborhood game of baseball, or that packs up and heads to church on Sunday morning.

Everyday America voted to put the brakes on a runaway train destined for tragedy. The Elite failed America, but Americans have spoken and said that “we will not fail! There will be an ‘America the Beautiful’ for my kids.”

This year the trees have strewn the ground with an awesome display of orange, gold, red, and yellow. I think I’ll go for a walk and enjoy my piece of America—how about you?
