Chancellor Merkel: EU-3 and U.S. Will Not Be Intimidated By Iran

Chancellor Merkel and President BushIn a White House press conference today, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said the EU-3 and the United States would not be intimidated by Iran:

White House—And I think a very successful chapter, for example, was opened over the past few days and weeks as regards Iran. To us Germans, too, it is totally unacceptable what Iran has said recently, for example, as regards the questioning the right of existence of Israel, the statements that were made with relevance to the Holocaust. And it’s essential, we feel, that the EU3, together with the United States, take a common position here, become active, that we try to persuade as many other countries as possible to join themselves to us, to ally themselves with us, and we will certainly not be intimidated by a country such as Iran.

I was very impressed with Chancellor Merkel today. She appeared to be both resolute and personable. I believe she’s going to be one woman that won’t be pushed around.

President Bush seemed to like the Chancellor as well even joking that they had something in common, “we both didn’t exactly landslide our way into office,” he said.

It looks as though Bush and Merkel have started their relationship off well. Best wishes Chancellor.
