accident scene at UNC pit areaA UNC alumnus took out some students today with his SUV when he drove through the “pit.”

Mohammed Reza Taheriazar sent six students to the hospital after he drove his Jeep Cherokee through an outdoor meeting area for students known as the “pit” ( no through traffic please ):

The Daily Tar Heel—A University graduate with at least one prior careened a rented silver Jeep Grand Cherokee through the Pit about noon Friday, striking nine pedestrians and sending six to UNC Hospitals with minor injuries.

Mohammed Reza Taheriazar, 22, of 3125 English Sparrow Lane in Charlotte, who graduated in 2005, is still in custody at the Department of Public Safety after turning himself in after the incident. DPS spokesman Randy Young said he will be transferred, likely to the Orange County Jail, but did not say when that would be. He was still at the jail as of 5:40 p.m. …

I think a lot of people are wondering if the cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed published by the student newspaper played a role in today’s incident. Pure speculation, that’s all you can say about it. Right now, only Mr. Taheriazar knows why he drove his SUV into the “pit” today; I’m just glad no one was killed and that everyone is all right.

Update (3/4/2006 7:17am):

A good question to be asking this morning—if Mohammed Reza Taheriazar did commit the attack in retribution over the treatment of Muslims as he allegedly said—is where did he get the idea to attack others? From the internet? From a local source? Who exactly is teaching this?

Another interesting observation this morning is the delicate way the media is handling the story. It’s like no one wants to talk about a Muslim attacking Americans in the relative safety of their homeland.

The Muslim Students Association at Chapel Hill has condemned yesterday’s attack:

UNCMSA—The Muslim Students Association joins the campus community in its shock and frustration at the events that occurred today in the pit. We are thankful none of the injuries were severe and our prayers are with all those affected. Although the driver appears to have been Muslim, he is not nor has he ever been a member of our organization. Our relationship with him was limited to the few appearances he made in a prayer room, which is a room on campus reserved by MSA open to anyone who desires a quiet place in which to pray.

We, alongside the rest of the campus community, anxiously await any information regarding the incident. Regardless of what his intentions prove to be, we wholeheartedly deplore this action, and trust that our fellow classmates will be able to dissociate the actions of this one disturbed individual from the beliefs of the Muslim community as a whole. Campus religious tensions have been running high as of late, and so we renew our commitment to work with the campus community and leaders to strengthen the bonds of friendship, cooperation, and faith in the community. Peace be upon you all.
