Dutch Government Falls After Hirsi Ali Controversy
Immigration minister Rita Verdonk wanted to withdraw Hirsi Ali’s passport over revelations that she lied on her Asylum request. The move sparked outrage and led the small D66 coalition partner to demand her ouster. D66 withdrew from the cabinet when the demand was refused, fracturing a fragile coalition of parties and leading to the fall of the current government led by Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.
