Breaking News: Huge Battle Raging In Najaf
Iraq’s Interior Ministry has told CNN that US and Iraqi forces have killed between 250 and 300 insurgents in a fierce battle inside an-Najaf, Iraq. Follow CNN for this breaking news.
Reuters is reporting that a U.S. military helicopter was shot down in the fighting; the military declined comment it said.

In a special report on the fighting, CNN says the U.S. military has confirmed that one of its helicopters was shot down killing the two-man crew.
A plot to kill Grand Ayatollah Sistani triggered the intense fighting when Iraqi security forces intervened to stop the plot. Iraqi officials estimated that 600 gunmen were involved in the battle that it now says is 90 percent complete.
