Allah’s In Heaven And Hitler’s On Earth

Absolutely fascinating article in Der Spiegel this morning. The story looks at Rommel’s Middle East campaign and how it almost brought holocaust to the region:

Der Spiegel—Behind the front line of Rommel’s Afrikakorps, a special unit was created in July 1942 to to plan the murder of Jews in the region. It was led by SS ObersturmbannfĂĽhrer, or Lieutenant Colonel, Walther Rauff, an experienced mass murderer who helped develop the mobile gassing vehicles the Germans used to murder Jewish people in their campaign in eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. …

Probably the saddest thing I read in the article was that shouts of “No more Monsieur, no more Mister, Allah’s in Heaven and Hitler’s on earth,” filled the streets of Damascus after Hitler’s armies defeated the French.

What is the deeper meaning of that slogan? I would surmise that is means people are quite willing to worship the devil if he gives them what they want.

The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it? Jeremiah 17:9

Again, a fascinating story and a must-read.
