A preliminary magnitude 6.8 earthquake has occurred under the ocean in waters near Guatemala. The 6.8 magnitude earthquake was centered at 13.628°N, 90.732°W and had a hypocentral depth of 40.3 miles.

On Friday, a 5.8 magnitude earthquake struck near the same coordinates, being centered at 13.798°N, 90.838°W. The hypocentral depth of that earthquake was 31.9 miles.

Many of these earthquakes are occurring along the Middle American Trench (MAT) that separates the Cocos and Caribbean plates. The MAT is where the Cocos plate subducts under the Caribbean plate.
