Are Jews Selfish?

By Tim | August 8, 2007 | Tags: , Leisure, Northern America |

Hmmm, are Jews selfish? Well, Big Brother 8 contestant Amber Siyavus Tomcavage apparently thinks so. But I don’t believe selfishness is confined to the Jewish race. We see plenty of selfishness all around us and I seriously doubt they are all Jewish. Amber’s thoughts were recorded while she spoke with fellow contestant Jameka.

The sad thing about Roger Friedman’s piece at Fox News, is that it reads like Friedman is trying to make it a Jewish/Christian conflict. Friedman writes, “Jameka, who professes to be a Christian, made no reaction to Amber’s declaration.” Wow, that’s really damning Roger. I’ve personally listened quietly to a lot of people espousing some stupid things, also quietly thinking how ignorant this person is.

In a way though, Friedman is right. Christians have sat quietly while Jews were sent to the slaughter. Some of us even participated. John Hagee spoke for me and many others when he uttered these words at AIPAC this year, “We ask G-d’s forgiveness, and yours, for every act of anti-semitism in our past.” And like John Hagee, I too believe we need to speak up and stand up lest the wicked come again for our brothers and sisters. Jews are not a blight on this earth, they are a blessing upon us all from the soverign G-d.

Roger, you are wrong to make the story a Jewish/Christian conflict, but at the same time, you are right that we should speak up and stand up.

    Roger:

There isn’t a Jewish “race”. We come in just about every colour of the human rainbow from blonde, blue-eyed Jews whose families sojourned in western and eastern Europe (particularly Poland, where we were once 25% of the population) to the very dark skinned Jews of Ethiopia. It is also possible that the Pathans of the tribal regions where Pakistan and Afghanistan meet were Jews who converted to Islam and tribes in the region where India and Berma meet as well. We are an identity that also transcends religious observances as we range from the fanatically observant to the very secularized. About all we seem to have in common is that understand that salvation is achieved through individual acts.

What this incident exemplifies is just how acceptable it has become to openly express hatred for Jews as an identifiable group these days by people who think themselves to be “liberal” or “progressive” to the point that a now former friend thought no better than to utter insulting comments about Jews in general (“show offs”) and use the establishment of the State of Israel as justification for “becoming somewhat anti-Semetic” as a guest at my invitation at my daughter’s wedding.
