Ellen McGaughey writes, “I painted the shadow of the cross instead of the soldiers shadow, to create a parallel between the soldier being willing to die for his country and Christ dieing for our spiritual liberty. The obvious wealth of this selfish dictator contrasts sharply with the poverty of the people. Light emanates from behind the soldier, offering a ray of hope to the world, as the curious children wonder about this thing called freedom. …”
