Tsunami Hits American Samoa

A tsunami has hit American Samoa following a 7.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred a little over 130 miles from the capital city of Pago Pago.

The earthquake was centered at 15.554°S, 172.141°W and had a hypocentral depth of 21.7 miles.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) says the earliest time a tsunami might hit Hawaii is 01:11 PM HST today. An investigation is underway to determine if a threat exists to Hawaii.

Sources report the tsunami killed 34 people in American Samoa. The tsunami watch for Hawaii was cancelled earlier today.

AP says 99 people were killed in Samoa and American Samoa. The magnitude of the earthquake is somewhere between magnitude 8.0 and 8.3

Australia and New Zealand both have received requests for help from the region. Several Australians are said to be missing. Two are confirmed dead.
