Earthquake in North Carolina!

An earthquake has just occurred in North Carolina. News sources are trying to confirm.

Shaking was confirmed in Raleigh and in Rocky Mount.

WRAL is reporting that a preliminary magnitude 5.8 earthquake occurred in Virginia today.

The earthquake was centered at 37.975°N, 77.969°W which is near Louisa and Mineral, VA

The earthquake struck at 1:51 and was felt up and down the U.S. east coast.

WRAL said just what I was thinking, that this 5.8 magnitude earthquake could set off other seismic events.

If you felt today’s earthquake, report it to the USGS.

  1. Felt slight rumble in Greenwood SC – lasted less than 1 sec – thought it was somenthing outside my first floor window.

    1. It lasted several seconds here in Raleigh, I’d say maybe 20 secs. We bounced around for a little while here. Maybe because Raleigh sits on a large, Very Large, boulder.

  2. We felt it in Hillsborough, NC. We thought there was someday working upstairs but some of my coworkers said the same thing..
