Oh No, Ractopamine Is In My Food!

By Tim | July 17, 2012 | Tags: General |

I was just reading a Taiwanese article about Ractopamine levels in imported US beef. I was stunned.

I’ve heard about hormones in milk and like most consumers, been concerned. Now I have to be concerned about Ractopamine in pork and beef meat.

The United Nations food standard body recently set an acceptable tissue residue standard that apparently gives a go ahead for Ractopamine use in farm animals destined for human consumption. National Hog Farmer says Ractopamine “is a feed ingredient that directs nutrients from fat to lean protein, helping increase the yield of lean meat from cattle and swine.”

It’s just so disheartening; why can’t we just have pure, drug-free farm animals?

MSNBC has a good article about Ractopamine use and the surrounding controversy.
