Philippine President Arroyo Spurns US—Again

The government of the Philippines President Gloria Arroyo has once again spurned the United States:

Daily Tribune—Pointed calls from American envoy to Manila Francis Ricciardone for the Arroyo government not to give in to the demands of the Iraqi kidnappers of overseas Filipino worker Roberto Tarongoy, snatched by Iraqi rebels along with an American and a Nepalese, or go into deals with the abductors have been spurned by President Arroyo, through the Department of Foreign Affairs, stating forcefully that the Philippine government has decided to move on its own and has ordered the DFA-Crisis Management Team and the Philippine Embassy in Baghdad to activate their contacts in Iraq and ascertain the whereabouts of the Filipino hostage and his Iraqi captors.

President Arroyo appears quite willing to empty the Philippines Treasury in an attempt to payoff and appease terrorists. President Arroyo’s lack of resolve and inability to ‘draw a line in the sand’ has opened up the Philippines to endless intimidation and payoffs to every two-bit terrorist that needs funding. Instead of empowering the Filipino People, she has effectively empowered terrorists.

According to the Daily Tribune, there are upwards of 6000 Filipino civilians working in Iraq today despite a travel ban that has been in effect since July.

With 6000 potential hostages, how much can Gloria Arroyo afford to pay? I believe we’ll have the unfortunate opportunity of finding out.
