Smuggling Tunnel Found Near Otay Mesa Border Crossing

Tijuana police discovered a smuggling tunnel near its Otay Mesa border crossing yesterday:

SignOnSanDiego—Mexican and U.S. authorities are investigating a cross-border tunnel found yesterday near the Otay Mesa Port of Entry.

The Tijuana police department, in a statement released last night, said the tunnel was about 50 feet long, and its entrance was accessible from a street on the Mexican side. . . .

Update (11/18/2005 3:08pm):

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said yesterday that the uncompleted tunnel is 3 feet underground and extends about 90 feet beyond the U.S. border. The tunnel is located about 1/4 mile east of the commercial compound at the Otay Mesa border crossing.
