Al-Qaeda Claims US Convoy Attack In Revenge For Abeer Qassim al-Janabi

Al-Qaeda is claiming that it attacked the US convoy in revenge for the rape and murder of Abeer Qassim al-Janabi last year.

Yeah, right. Do they actually think that Iraqis are going to believe that an organization that has been blowing them up left and right is fighting for Abeer’s honor? I don’t think so. More likely, US/Iraqi forces are about rain death and destruction down on them.

I just pray to God that those terrorists haven’t done to the missing soldiers what they did to Thomas Tucker and Kristian Menchaca.

Lord Jesus, help those poor men.

Abeer Hamza Murder Case: Soldier That Told Facing Threats

According to ArmyTimes, a U.S. Senator says the soldier that told authorities about the rape and murder of Abeer Qasim Hamza is receiving threats:

ArmyTimes—By coming forward, Watt became — in the eyes of his father and one Army officer — a different kind of war hero, one whose valor wasn’t immediately commended and who now lives with the fear of payback from other soldiers. A U.S. senator has told the Army that Watt has “received threats,” and the Army says it is investigating whether Watt is in danger. …

Abeer Qasim Hamza

Abeer HamzaReuters has released a photograph of Abeer Qasim Hamza’s 1991 passport that shows her to be 14 years old. Abeer is a beautiful little girl and it breaks my heart to think of the hideous crime committed against her and her family.

A lot of folks—good and bad—are using this crime to bash America and her servicemen and women. Let me say this, if they are proven to be guilty, they are nothing more than street thugs that do not represent America’s military people. And they absolutely DO NOT REPRESENT AMERICA.

We see people just like them on the streets of Canberra, Paris, London, Tokyo, Ottawa, Brussels, and Amman. Street thugs aren’t unique to America, I believe we can all agree on that. Unfortunately, these thugs found a home in the U.S. Military, and in Iraq, they found themselves with automatic weapons and opportunity.

Americans have always been good-hearted people, and they still are. When Tsunamis devastated Indonesia, Americans opened their wallets and gave generously to help the suffering; when Pakistan reeled from a devastating earthquake, Americans were there. Americans LOVE; Americans CARE.

But isn’t there always a bad apple to taint the lot?

As before, I offer my heartfelt condolences to Abeer’s family. God bless.

In closing, let’s do remember that the soldiers are simply accused; their guilt or innocence hasn’t been established; so lets give the justice system a chance to do its job.

More Soldiers Charged In Iraqi Girl Rape/Murder Case

CENTCOM says three more soldiers have been charged in the rape and murder of Abeer Qasim Hamza, and the murder of her family. A fourth soldier has been charged with dereliction of duty:

CENTCOM—Charges have been preferred against three Soldiers accused of rape and murder and a fourth Soldier accused of dereliction of duty for failing to report the offenses.

On July 8, 2006, the four Soldiers were charged in connection with their alleged participation in the rape and murder of a young Iraqi woman and three members of her family. The fourth Soldier was charged with dereliction of duty for his failure to report the rape and murder of these Iraqi civilians, but is not alleged to have been a direct participant in the rape and killings.

All are charged with conspiring with former Private First Class Steven D. Green to commit these crimes.
The preferral of court-marital charges is merely an accusation. Those accused are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The next step in the legal process will be an investigation pursuant to Article 32, Uniform Code of Military Justice. Article 32 investigations are similar to grand jury hearings.

Iraq Wants UN To Ensure Punishment For Soldiers That Raped/Killed Girl And Family

I knew something along this line was coming; Iraq wants the UN Security Council to ensure that the soldiers that raped and killed an Iraqi girl and her family receive punishment for their crime:

MSNBC—Iraq’s justice minister demanded Tuesday that the U.N. Security Council ensure a group of U.S. troops is punished for allegedly raping and murdering a young Iraqi woman and executing her family, calling the attack “monstrous and inhuman.” …

The victims are said to be:

Abeer Qasim Hamza,15, raped and shot in the head, body also showed burns;
Fakhriyah Taha Muhsin, 34, killed by gunshots to her head;
Qasim Hamza Raheem, 45, whose head was “smashed” by bullets;
Hadeel Qasim Hamza, 7, Abeer’s sister, shot.

Back on June 30th, I offered my heartfelt condolences to the family and I do so again today. I am so sorry for what happened to them. God help them and may the persons that allegedly committed that horrible crime be punished to the full extent the law allows.

American Soldiers Accused Of Raping Iraqi Girl And Murdering Her Family

Five U.S. soldiers are being investigated for the alleged rape and murder of an Iraqi girl and her family:

Forbes—Five U.S. Army soldiers are being investigated for allegedly raping a young woman, then killing her and three members of her family in Iraq, the U.S. military said Friday.

The soldiers also allegedly burned the body of the woman they are accused of raping. …

When I read the details of Pfc. Kristian Menchaca and Pfc. Thomas L. Tucker’s torture, I was shocked, horrified, and outraged. And still am. And the act of raping, murdering, burning a girl, and murdering her family outrages me just as much as what those inhuman terrorists did to our soldiers. I don’t know if the allegations against the five soldiers are true or not, but I know human nature and I’d say it’s possible the crime could have occurred.

Regardless of whether or not these allegations are true, this horrific crime will be used to justify continuing attacks and atrocities against soldiers and to enflame anti-American passions in the Muslim world.

Allegations true or not, I offer my heartfelt condolences to the family.

Update (6/29/2006 1:32pm)

The BBC is reporting that one soldier has confessed to participating in the crime and has been arrested.

Update (6/29/2006 1:54pm)

A big “Whoa” on this story. Yahoo! News is running a story saying the five soldiers are from Tucker and Menchaca’s platoon. Could their brutal murders have been retaliation? And apparently the horrific way they died led one of the five accused soldiers to confess. Big “Whoa”:

“However, a U.S. official close to the investigation said at least one of the soldiers, all assigned to the 502nd Infantry Regiment, has admitted his role and been arrested. Two soldiers from the same regiment were slain this month when they were kidnapped at a checkpoint near Youssifiyah.

“The official told the AP the accused soldiers were from the same platoon as the two slain soldiers. The military has said one and possibly both of the slain soldiers were tortured and beheaded.

“The official said the mutilation of the slain soldiers stirred feelings of guilt and led at least one of them to reveal the rape-slaying on June 22.”

Update (6/29/2006 2:26pm)

The Jawa Report is sounding off with its take on the alleged crime:

The Jawa Report—The specifics of this particular case, at least as reported by the AP, are too fantastic to take seriously, even if a soldier has allegedly confessed to being part of some of it.

It is quite likely that women in Iraq have been raped by U.S. soldiers. It’s just a matter of statistical probabilities. For every X number of men, there are Y number of perverts and criminals. Even in the military. So, when hundreds of thousands of men are rotated into a nearly lawless situation, it is only a matter of time and opportunity that misdeeds will occur.

But to take seriously the notion that FIVE soldiers gang-raped a girl, murdered her, burned her body, and then murdered her family to cover up the crime is simply beyond the pale. It would make a good movie script, but it’s just too far out there to even begin to take seriously.

And if the accusation is not that this is what happened, then the AP has done an excellent job of making their story sound as if that is what happened–which is a crime in itself. …

Update (7/1/2006 3:58pm)

More details are coming out today. It is believed that the soldiers studied the family for about a week before carrying out the alleged crime. A soldier that overheard the accused planning the crime later saw them with “bloodstained” clothes.

Update (7/3/2006 7:34am)

The Washington Post has a story up with names of the victims and a few more details about the alleged crime.

The victims are said to be:

Abeer Qasim Hamza,15, raped and shot in the head, body also showed burns;
Fakhriyah Taha Muhsin, 34, killed by gunshots to her head;
Qasim Hamza Raheem, 45, whose head was “smashed” by bullets;
Hadeel Qasim Hamza, 7, Abeer’s sister, shot.

An unnamed military official pointed out one discrepancy in reports about the alleged cime; that is the age of Abeer. She is believed to be 20, not 15.
