Big Mac Lovers prepare to be amazed

Big Mac lovers, prepare to be amazed!

McDonalds has released a beast from its kitchen.  This beast is the Grand Mac with 1/3 lb. of ground beef.  It’s everything we love and more of it!  I tried one today and was not disappointed.  The burger itself was a filling meal and so tasty.  I only have one question for McDonalds: why did it take so long? Got to have another, soon…oh, and please don’t tell Hamburgler.

Thank you McDonalds.

Mama’s Pizza Serves Up Heavenly Lasagna

I had some lasagna today that can be summed up in one word—heavenly.

I needed a quick bite this afternoon so I stopped at Mama’s Pizza located at 1340 Benvenue Rd. in Rocky Mount, NC. I ordered their lasagna, hoping it would fill a hollow spot. After the first bite, I felt like Garfield. It was the best lasagna I have ever eaten…manna from heaven…

The restaurant isn’t far from I-95 so if you’re near, stop in and savor the best lasagna your mouth will ever enjoy.

NC Sweet Potato Gleaning

I picked up about 5 bushels of sweet potatoes yesterday from a farmer’s field that had just been harvested; done with permission of course.

The sweet potatoes I picked will be shared with some friends and some donated to a mission here in Raleigh—if they want them.

I think the farmer waited too late to harvest them. The field was loaded with over-sized sweet potatoes. There were still plenty of good ones left to choose from though.

Reflecting on my experience yesterday reminds me of Acts 14.17 :

Nevertheless he left not himself without witness, in that he did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.

It was a good experience for my child too, learning that food doesn’t magically appear in Walmart; people have to grow it, care for it, harvest it.

Thank you NC farmers.

Virgin Organic Coconut Oil Taste Test

I’ve been using Nutiva brand organic extra-virgin coconut oil for quite a while now, but I’ve decided to give Tropical Traditions a try.

I’ve ordered, yes ordered as in paid for, Tropical Traditions organic Gold Label Virgin coconut oil.

When it arrives, I’ll do some taste testing and some cooking and let you know which one I believe is best.

This is one test that I’m anxious to get underway!

Update 10/4/2011 I received the Tropical Traditions Gold Label coconut oil today. Initially, I’m unimpressed. There is no coconut aroma at all and I can’t say there is any flavor.

More later.

Update 10/5/2011 The oil was solid when I received it yesterday, which may account for its lack of aroma. I melted some in a pan and cooked with it this morning. Much more coconut aroma.

More later.

Update 10/30/2011 I don’t know about purity and lauric acid content, but I really think Nutiva has a superior flavor and aroma, so I’m going to stick with them.

Congratulations Nutiva.

Natto On The Neuse

Natto on the Neuse

Well, it isn’t really on the Neuse River, but it is an incredible title!

After reading about how good natto is for you, and after tasting an EXPENSIVE variety from Japan that I purchased at our local Asian store, I’ve decided to ferment my own from organic, non-gmo soybeans.

Natto bacteria

Man, they must keep that stuff in Ft. Knox; it’s incredibly hard to find, but I’m looking at some online sources.

If anyone has any natto fermenting tips, send them on!

El Tapatio Now Offering Made-To-Order Guacamole

I stopped by El Tapatio Mexican restaurant in Rocky Mount today. To my delight, I found they now offered made-to-order guacamole.

That’s right, made-to-order. The server brings the cart to your table and the guacamole is made right there in front of you. You choose the ingredients and how much of each you like.

Choose from a variety of ingredients: lime, salt, tomato, onions, cilantro, and jalapeño. If you’re on a sodium reduced diet, you can specify little or no salt. The server adds the ingredients to a mortar containing avocado (freshly peeled for you) and crushes them with a pestle, creating just the texture you desire. I thought that was really cool.

I’ve been there several times and it always feels like family and friends.

Next time you’re in Rocky Mount, stop in and give them a try. They’re located at 1296 N Wesleyan Blvd.

I just dined at the LongHorn Steakhouse at Brier Creek in Raleigh.

Habanero Egg Salad

I stirred up a wonderful batch of habanero egg-salad today. My child shared a sore throat, fever, and congestion with me, which we’re just getting over. I thought the spicy egg-salad might help.

I ate it and was like, wow! This stuff is really good.

All I did was mix chopped, boiled eggs with Duke’s mayonnaise, apple cider vinegar, and Tabasco brand habanero sauce.

I simply mixed in the ingredients slowly until I had the taste I like. I like a more sour taste so I add more vinegar.

Try it and enjoy.
